At Downeast Dayboat, we offer the freshest, most delectable scallops on the market today. Working closely with our fishermen means our premium Maine scallops get to you faster and fresher so you can taste the difference a day makes®.

Downeast Dayboat’s mission supports both our partner fishermen and sustainable harvesting. Rather than having to dump their catch into the industrially harvested glut of “commodity scallops,” our fishermen commit to small-catch sustainable practices and in turn receive a fair price for their efforts. At the end of the season, they also receive a sustainability bonus for having abided by all regulations designed to protect the scallop resource, which further supports the health of the fishery.

So all together it’s good for the scallop resource, good for the fishermen and good for the consumer.

How to buy our scallops:

Our product is always the freshest possible because at Downeast Dayboat we don’t have a warehouse full of inventory – our scallops stay on the ocean floor until you order them. We coordinate with our fishermen to determine which boats to buy from on which days based on weather conditions and order volume.

  • We ship on Tuesdays or Wednesdays – unless it’s blowing a gale, in which case we’ll get in touch with you to figure out an alternative. That means it’s best to order by Sunday night of the week you want your scallops. They’ll be shipped out on Tuesday or Wednesday, so you’ll receive them on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, depending on where you are in the country and which shipping option you choose. You can also order as far in advance as you want – just select the delivery week you prefer when you place your order.
  • Our product is shipped via Fed Ex in a Styrofoam* cooler with gel packs to keep them cold.
  • Storing your scallops when they arrive.
Remove them from the cooler as soon as possible (but they’ll be fine in the cooler for up to a day if necessary).Your scallops will arrive with the harvest date indicated on the package. If you plan to eat them within a week of harvest: Place the entire sealed bag of scallops in the refrigerator in a bowl surrounded by ice – the colder they are the longer they’ll keep. Just make sure the bag is sealed so no melting ice can leak in – trust me, you don’t want to dilute the flavor of these scallops. If you DO NOT plan to eat them within a week of harvest date: Simply place the whole bag in the freezer. A Downeast Dayboat scallop frozen within days of harvest will always win out over a “fresh” grocery store scallop which often sits on the boat for more than a week, and who knows how long it takes to get to you after that (or what it’s been exposed to). Storage and freezing instructions are also included in every package.

*Sorry – at this point there are no good alternatives to Styrofoam for this type of shipping. Please re-use the cooler!
